It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Monte Sahlin, the first Director of Adventist Community Services (ACS) for the North American Division.
Monte Sahlin devoted more than forty years to faithful ministry and visionary leadership within the Seventh-day Adventist Church. His service was marked by a deep commitment to community development, social engagement, and compassionate outreach. As the inaugural NAD ACS Director, Monte was instrumental in shaping the structure and mission of our department. His innovative thinking and strategic guidance elevated ACS into a recognized and respected force within the wider humanitarian community, helping to establish the values and approaches we continue to uphold today.
In what would become our final exchange, Monte and I communicated through a series of text messages—four or five in total—just last week. He generously contributed his insights as I worked on a historical overview of ACS, offering the same thoughtful counsel that defined his years of service. It was only at the close of our conversation that Monte revealed he was writing from hospice care. Upon learning this, I assured him that he would be held in my prayers. That moment, quiet yet profound, is one I will not soon forget.
We mourn the loss of a leader, mentor, and servant of God whose impact will be felt for generations to come. On behalf of the entire ACS family across the North American Division, we extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Monte’s family during this time of deep sorrow.
May we honor his legacy by continuing the work he helped establish—faithful to God’s call to serve, uplift, and restore communities in need.
